Small things you can Do
There are many small things you can do like:
Collect plastic bags and return them to Supermarkets, or better yet, do not use them at all. Use cotton bags as an alternative. Why? It can take as long as 500 years for a plastic bag to decompose.
Plant a tree to help address the situation of our oxygen supply. Currently, 2000 trees per minute are being destroyed world wide. Taking into account that one tree will provide oxygen for two people for the rest of their lives, it is vital we do not allow further destruction of trees and native bush. Not only will planting a tree yourself help stabilise the situation, but it will also encourage wildlife back into these areas and become their natural habitat once again.
Wasting resources:
- Water Irrigation daytime in Sun
- Rainwater for garden, shower and flushing toilet
- Shower and Dishwashing water used for watering plants
- Buy a water diverter hose. This saves wasting our water supply. The hose can be attached to your washing machine and redirect the grey water to your garden. Your plants will love you for it!
- Turn off the water whilst brushing your teeth. Up to 9 litres of water can go down the drain literally in a minute.
- Fill the kettle with only the water you need. This saves electricity!
- Turn off the airconditioner in rooms you do not use
- Alter the temperature of the airconditioner a few degrees. Setting the thermostat at a mere one degree lower than standard, 15% will be saved off your electricity bill
- Similarly, turning down the heat thermostat by one more degree will save a further 15%.
- Turn off lights in rooms you do not use. Also, use energy saving light bulbs.
- Energy saving light bulbs are more expensive but save up to 75% electicity.
- Turn your office lights off. Think of the city landscape at night. Are you picturing a collection of buildings with hundreds of lights left on throughout the night? Noone is in the office to need the lighting.
- A common waste of both energy and money is a television that is left on standby mode.
- Likewise, a Videorecorder or DVD Player on standby may use close to as much electricity as when it is actually playing a tape.
- An enormous amount of paper gets wasted every day by both individuals and companies.
- It has been estimated that in excess of 100 million trees are cut down yearly to fulfill Australian offices paper requirements. Using both sides of the paper can drastically cut down this waste.
Recycling:
Australia has too much space to bury garbage inland. We have to start recycling more!
Mobile phones can be recycled! It is all too easy to throw your phone in the bin, but imagine if from this, the 10 million unused phones in Australia at the moment are dumped in landfill. This would cause soil contamination due to the leaking of poisonous chemicals. Phone retailers can recycle phones, so next time you are at the shopping centre pop into the phone shop with your old phone and help the environment!
If your computer is too old and doesn't fit your needs. Give it to somene who can use it rather than throwing it away.
Before you throw your old eye glasses out, give a thought to those who cannot afford glasses that they very much need. 200 million people around the world need glasses every year. Take your glasses to the optometrist for donation.
Keep our Country clean.
The number of cigarette butts thrown away every year is over 9 billion in New South Wales alone. These butts filter toxins and chemicals into the waterways and soils of our precious earth.
And who likes those cigarette butts buried in the sand of our lovely beaches! We have the nicest beaches in the world so start appreciate them and don't take them for granted and don't leave cigarette butts and garbage when you leave - the bins are mostly just a view metres from the beach!
Use Sun to heat warm water, Pools, spas and produce Electricity -> its there and for free
Drive cars that use less petrol, and car pool where possible when driving to a commonplace. Better still, catch a bus!
Use natural washing powders, substances and cleaning products
Don't waste any resources
