Metabolic Syndrome – Syndrome X
Health Practitioners are seeing patients suffering from chronic menstrual disorders, erectile dysfunction, irritable bowel syndrome, hypertension, fatigue, sleep disorders, depression, gout, acne and infertility who, despite receiving treatment, show little improvement for no apparent reason. It may be that these patients are suffering from Syndrome X or metabolic syndrome.
It has been found that there is an association between some common cardiovascular risk factors which are all connected to insulin resistance.
Should a person have any three of the following symptoms they do have Syndrome X:
Hypertension
High triglycerides
High fasting glucose
Low HDL (good) cholesterol and
A high waist circumference (for men, larger than 102cm, for women, higher than 88cm).
The terrifying facts show that this syndrome is rapidly escalating – over one million people in New Zealand and over five million people in Australia demonstrate the symptoms of having Syndrome X. It is important for everybody to detect and recognise signs of this syndrome, as without doing we are placing lives in jeopardy due to the serious nature of the cardiovascular diseases.
