Artificial Light and Cancer
The Connection between Artificial Light and Cancer
Scientists believe there is a direct link between artificial light and cancer. They state that the increase of leukaemia in Europe, USA and the UK may be connected to the exposure to artificial light at night time.
Turning on the lights after dark may affect our clock genes that control how our cells function, live and die. Especially the interference of artificial light at night with the molecular mechanism that control multiplication and cell death can cause cancer.
Our clock genes were only discovered five years ago. They are responsible to tell the cells to divide, or telling abnormal cells to self-destruct.
The link between light and cancer is seen in the hormone Melatonin. Melatonin is responsible for protecting genetic material from mutation. Artificial light suppresses our body’s melatonin production and therefore increases the risk of cancer related mutations.
It is important that you turn off the lights at night when you and your children are sleeping to ensure your body to produce high levels of cancer protecting Melatonin.
Bright sunshine exposure outdoors during the day and sleeping in complete darkness at night ensures the best Melatonin production.
